Our Story

The vision for Stone’s Throw began in the summer of 2009 out of Glasgow Church. Rather than start a small church plant, several hundred people from the Glasgow campus committed to be a part of the effort to be led by Pastor Dan Betters to launch a church in Middletown, Delaware.

In March 2010 we began meeting in the gymnasium of Glasgow Church while we finalized securing facilities in Middletown. A few weeks later on April 11, 2010 the first worship gathering was held at the church's first home, Appoquinimink High School. A few months later we had our public launch on September 12, 2010.

Originally, the goal to become an independent church was thought to take several years, but as God began to bless us with many new faces the need to manage and lead this new group grew quickly. With help from Glasgow Church, we had become incorporated within a few months . Shortly thereafter, in the summer of 2011, we became a particularized church with our mission to serve the Middletown and surrounding areas.

In the middle of 2011, the congregation voted to lease office space in The Exchange building in the very center of historic Middletown—a location that thousands of people drive by every day. This location now serves as office space for our staff as well as a meeting location for counseling sessions, training classes, youth group, and more.

On November 11, 2012, the congregation voted to purchase land and move ahead with a campaign to construct a building as our permanent home in West Middletown.  The campaign officially began on December 16, 2012 and in June 2013 we purchased about 6 acres in the area becoming known as Westown strategically located near local shops, restaurants, and a movie theater in order to be located where our community is doing life together.
